In The Wake Of The Tsunami - Part 2

The Phi Phi Islands - Krabi, Thailand
2/27/2006

Phi Phi Lei - Amazing place here. This is where they filmed the movie The Beach.

The Phi Phi Islands are 2 islands between Phuket and Krabi in the Andaman Sea. This is the place that got hit the worst by the tsunami. 1800 people lost their lives here that day. Unlike Phuket, you can see where the wave plowed over the island. The main area of  Ton Sai Beach is a thin strip of land with water on both sides. This area is where all the boats dock and where all the guesthouses, restaurants and bars are. When the tsunami hit the island, it wrapped around the island, coming in on both sides of Ton Sai Beach taking out everything in it's path. Absolutely devastating - people there never had a chance. There are a lot of concrete buildings and palm trees that withstood the wave but everything else is gone. You can tell right away when you look at that area from the water. There are 2 other spots on the island where that happened.

They're doing a lot of building here, right where the old buildings were (which I can't understand). They're recovering OK, but they need the tourism money to keep going. All they ask is that you come to Phi Phi and spend money. They suffered quite a hit last year but the people are coming back to this piece of paradise.

Looking out at Phi Phi Don where the Tsunami hit. The used to be a lot more palm trees in that sparse area off to the left.
